Local 1400 Scholarships

Our annual deadline for local scholarship applications is May 31.

The UFCW Local 1400 Education and Training Trust makes scholarships available to Local 1400 members and their children.

To be eligible, members must:
  • work for a participating employer, and
  • must be accepted into a recognized public education facility for post secondary training or education (for example Saskatchewan Polytechnic or the University).

UFCW Local 1400 Youth Committee Scholarship Award

This scholarship consists of one $500 award and is open to any young member in good standing and who is presently enrolled in, or accepted to attend, a post secondary institute in the fall of the current year.

Applications must include a 1000-word essay on Why My Union Doesn’t Suck – write about why it’s better to have a union than not.  Maybe you had a grievance and your union helped you out – it’s up to you to tell us.  The successful applicant must be able to provide confirmed enrollment in a post-secondary institution.

The application deadline is May 31 yearly.

UFCW Local 1400 Scholarship Awards

In the spring of 2006, Local 1400 introduced this scholarship award for all members of the local. This scholarship consists of two $500 awards and is open to any member of Local 1400 in good standing (or their children).

UFCW Local 1400 Albert Tholl Scholarship Awards

This scholarship consists of five $1,000 scholarships and two $500 scholarships available.

Eligibility for these scholarships is limited to members of UFCW Local 1400 (with Collective Agreements) that are in the Education Fund:

  • members employed at Westfair Foods (province-wide),
  • Canada Safeway in Moose Jaw,
  • all security companies in Saskatchewan,
  • Great Western Brewing Company, and
  • Brewers Distributor Limited.

In addition, there will be three $500 scholarships available for the children of eligible Local 1400 members, again employed at the above noted employers in the Education Fund.

webCampus Scholarship

A scholarship opportunity for UFCW Local 1400 members who have completed their final certificate through UFCW webCampus and Mohawk College in Occupational Health and Safety and/or Labour Studies. This scholarship will reimburse successfully certified applicants to a maximum of $400. Proof of certificate achievement is required with this application.


Provincial, National and International UFCW Scholarships

George Semeniuk Memorial Scholarship Award (UFCW SK Provincial Council)

In the spring of 2006, the UFCW Provincial Council introduced this scholarship award. The scholarship is open to any UFCW member in Saskatchewan in good standing (or their spouse or children). The George Semeniuk Memorial Scholarship consists of one $1,000 scholarship which will be presented to the candidate who displays vast involvement within his or her community, union, political and/or volunteer organizations. Academic standards are secondary criteria, making this scholarship unique. Brother Semeniuk dedicated his life to the Labour Movement and fought hard to make improvements for all working people.

UFCW Canada Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu Scholarship Program

Recognizing the importance of post secondary education in today’s society, UFCW Canada offers 18 annual scholarships (Western Provinces:  five scholarships awarded) to members and their children for post secondary study.  Allocated by regions across Canada these scholarships are named as a lasting tribute to three past leaders of our union:  William Beggs, Fred Dowling and Roméo Mathieu.

UFCW International Scholarship Program

Several scholarships of up to $8000 each to be awarded to members or their unmarried dependants. Visit www.ufcw.org for more information.

CLC and UWCC Post-Secondary Scholarship

Young workers today are facing many social and workplace issues. However, many have taken these challenges as an opportunity to create positive change, and impact their communities for the better.
This scholarship is offered in recognition of the efforts and commitment of young workers across Canada who have demonstrated commitment to positively impacting social and workplace issues in their community.
We are incredibly proud to offer a scholarship in the amount of $2,500 to support a young activist who is starting their first year of full-time post-secondary study in September.
The application deadline is August 9.
